I took this photo of the Ships Restaurant on Overland Blvd. in Los Angeles the week it closed. Don't be fooled by the vintage car, I took this picture sometime in the mid-1990's.
Ships was an example of Googie architecture, an ultra-futuristic style common in California in the 1950's and 1960's.

I lived in San Diego but my friends and I would travel up to Los Angeles on an almost weekly basis in the late 70s to mid 80s, when a full tank of gas cost about $6.00.
One of our favorite spots was Ships on Overland. In fact, we were kind of regulars there. They had great food, great atmosphere and the waitresses were always friendly.
I loved reading their menu that talked about the qaulity of their ground beef, the special care they took in selecting the finest meet and produce for their patrons.
And I loved having a toaster at each table. Wow, fond memories.
let us go back just a little more in time.. when I lived in Westwoodd (near UCLA) I would eat 3 to 4 times a week at Ships on Wilshire blvd. near westwood blvd. Loved the salad with blue cheese and grated carrots..great hamburgers..
I lived a block from the intersection of Wilshire and Westwood while in HighSchool, Uni. What was the name of the drive in across from Ships?
This was a little before my time. According to my brother,it may have been Tiny Naylor's (on the northwest corner. On the southeast was Truman's, which had a bit of a Jungle Cruise motif.
Mom and Dad and I used to go the Ship's on Westwood and Wilshire..so much fun! Yup-the toaster at the table..so many cool things then.My dad worked at that Tiny Naylor's around the corner as a chef. Does anyone remember L's restaurant in Westwood?
Eversince when my parents and I lived in LA back in the 80s all 3 ships locations were my favourite places to eat. They used to like going there but me (as a little kid) though I was a sucker in terms begging them to take there when they were off from work and me from school.
Are there any ships buildings still around? Do yu kno of anyplace I can get Ships memorabilia? IE, t-shirts, menus or other things ?
